Ernst Ernst Guide Guide Tax Diseased trees have to go, he explained. Others are leaning perilously. Dense branches, too, must be removed because they block sunlight and retard the growth of grass, flowers, and shrubs. Most of the 12, some seven and eight decades old, will be replaced later in the year, he added.

Tax Return "The good news," Coutts said wearily, "is that people love this Green, and they take this sort of thing personally."

Return Tax Indeed, by Friday the cutting had been stopped, at least temporarily, although the work was nearly completed. Town officials belatedly cited ordinances requiring tree-trimming permits and special requirements for altering historic sites.

Guide Guide Master Master Tax Few New Jersey sites are steeped in as much history as the Morristown Green. George Washington established the first of two Morristown military headquarters adjacent to the site, where a courthouse stood. Alexander Hamilton strolled there frequently with his betrothed.

Tax Preparation Modeled after greens in England and New England, the 2.5-acre oasis was established as a green in the 1820s when the county courthouse was moved from there to Washington Street.

Preparation Tax Today, it is embellished with Civil War statues, paths, shrubs, rhododendrons, pansies, squirrels, and - before the trimming - 70 trees.

Employer Tax Guide It remains the focal point for a modern, busy downtown, one of New Jersey's few greens. It is one of two owned by non-profit interests. Upkeep, including the $17,500 tab for tree-pruning, is paid by the town, mostly from a state grant.

Tax Services Officials agreed that the timing of the work could have been better. This year's official New Jersey Travel Guide, a slick, 152-page magazine that shows off top travel destinations, features the Green in a color portrait. It will be several months, said Coutts, before the Green again looks as artist Kamil Kubik depicted it.

Services Tax Leslie Bensley, executive director of the Morris County Visitors Center, promises "it will look better than ever."

Master Tax Guide It was Bensley who proposed the painting for the guide's cover after the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Morristown one of America's dozen distinctive destinations last year.

Tax Attorney Last week, town officials said the final trimming and cleanup would likely continue after the contractor files the appropriate paperwork. Coutts was anxious to complete a project that his board undertook reluctantly.

Attorney Tax "Nobody likes to cut down trees," he said, "so the board did a lot of soul-searching. But it had to be done. The Green hadn't been thinned since 1979."

Guide Law Tax Mayor John "Jay" DeLaney fended off questions about chain saws buzzing through his town's chief treasure. The site was purchased in 1816 from the Morristown Presbyterian Church by the Green's Board of Trustees for $1,600, DeLaney said, and today it remains "priceless."

Tax Accountant The tax assessor fixed the value at closer to $2.6 million, but Coutts sided with the mayor and the Green's legions of proprietary fans.

Accountant Tax "President Bush couldn't buy it for the $74 billion he needs to continue the war in Iraq," he quipped.
