New Jersey and Connecticut, the study found, have consistently ranked 50th and 49th, respectively, among the states in the ratio of federal spending to federal tax collections. The Washington, D.C.-based Tax Foundation calculated that for every federal tax dollar collected in New Jersey in 2002, the state received only 62 cents in federal spending, a level that was down from 66 cents a decade earlier in 1992, according to the Bloustein study.

Tax Help And New Jersey residents are already lining up to oppose his expected tax hikes.

The three states have 10.8 percent of the nation's population, but contributed 15.1 percent of federal income and employment taxes in 2003, the analysis showed. If the federal taxes New Jersey paid were proportional to its population, New Jersey would have saved almost $26 billion, more than the state budget of $24.1 billion that year. Rutgers University professor Joseph Seneca, author of the study with Bloustein school Dean James W. Hughes, said the study shows that at the federal level, New Jersey needs to do a better job in competing for federal revenue.

Help Tax "It's utterly ridiculous. We have to have the guts to cut spending and live within our means," Bogota Mayor Steven Lonegan said.

We are required by law to collect 6.5% sales tax for Minnesota residents and 4.5% sales tax for Virginia residents.

Ernst Ernst Guide Guide Tax Lonegan on Monday established a grassroots group to oppose Corzine's expected tax increases.

Tax Return Corzine has indicated he favors sales tax hikes as part of a plan to close a $4 billion budget gap. But the state's inability to increase school aid is expected to force local governments to increase property taxes.

Master Tax Guide To me its premature for him to be talking about tax increases raising the sales tax and he's not cutting the fat out of the government first," Jones said.

Tax Attorney But Mayor Lonegan said he has a long list of projects that he knows are clearly laudable, but he said they should be cut before tax hikes are on the table.

Attorney Tax "Why are New Jersey residents so shocked? Sen. Corzine is an obvious tax and spend liberal. All one needed to do was look at his senate voting record," says Mike Baker, a political analyst.

Guide Law Tax "Corzine told voters he would lower taxes and they actually believed him. When will voters learn that a tax and spend liberal doesn't change overnight."

Tax Accountant The most obvious tax hike will be an increase in New Jersey's sales tax. Retailers believe this will make the "land of shopping malls" less desirable for shoppers. One study showed many New Yorkers come to Jersey because of the low sales tax when compared to New York's 8.5%. Now, New Jersey will have a sales tax that will make New Yorkers' shopping trips to Jersey less desirable, many business leaders claim. Also, many retail items that are tax-exempt are expected to be taxed under Corzine's plan.
