Bruker AXS launches new products at PITTCON 2004

Tax Software By WTN News • 03/08/04 Madison, Wis. -- Bruker AXS Inc., the Madison-based division of Bruker BioSciences Corporation, launched a bevy of products at the PITTCON 2004 in Chicago Thursday. Highlighted products include new technology to quickly produce protein crystal structures, a new solution for the S2 RANGER energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer and SuperSpeedSolutions.

Bruker AXSs Crystal Farm imaging system is designed to simplify and automate protein crystallization. By integrating incubation at predetermined temperatures with optical imaging of the crystal growth plates at pre-scheduled intervals, Crystal Farm accelerates the process of growing diffraction-quality protein crystals.

There is increasing interest in high-throughput structural genomics in both basic biosciences and drug discovery. That this is a high national priority is reflected in, for example, the recent announcement and the significant funding of the second phase of the NIH Protein Structure Initiative, said Roger Durst, Bruker AXS chief technology officer and life science product line manager.

EQUA ALL, a solution for the S2 RANGER energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, was also launched at the conference. This technology enables quantification of elements in all concentration ranges and matrices when used in tandem with Brukers S2 RANGER.

The newly developed mathematical algorithm directly correlates the measured spectrum with the concentrations of all elements in the sample without intermediate steps. This unique direct correlation procedure automatically handles line overlaps and inter-element effects using a fundamental parameter approach. EQUA ALL thus allows the measurement of a wide range of different sample types and preparations, said Karl Eugen Mauser, project manager software and method development.

Bruker AXSs also exhibited two X-ray diffraction systems at the conference, Turbo-X-ray Source and the VANTEC-1 detector, under the banner SuperSpeedSolutions.

Turbo-X-ray Source has up to 18kW power and is fully integrated into the D8 platform, similar to other sealed tubes in conventional XRD systems. The Turbo X-ray Source, in combination with the new VANTEC-1 detector enables researchers to perform time-resolved X-ray diffraction experiments with milliseconds time resolution. Together, the technologies are designed to increase X-ray sensitivity and speed.
